Frequently Asked Questions
If you’re wondering, chances are someone else has too. Here’s the place where your questions meet answers.
Q: How should I arrive for my curl appointment? Please come with your hair clean, dry, completely detangled, and styled in its natural curl pattern. It should be down and free of ponytails, braids, or buns. Avoid heavy oils or butters. This helps me see your true curl shape so we can get the best results together!
Q: How do I know if your services are for me? My services are for women who want to celebrate, nurture, and embrace their natural curls , but especially those with tight curls and coils. If you’ve been searching for a stylist who truly understands your super curly or highly textured hair then you’re in the right place! I’m passionate about working with women who wear their hair in its natural state whether you have big voluminous curls, springy coils, or kinks that need specialized care. If you’re relaxed, straightened, or have looser waves and prefer to wear your hair smoothed out, my services may not be the best fit. My goal is to help women with naturally curly hair feel confident and cared for, whether you’re starting your healthy curl journey, maintaining your shape, or planning a curly bridal style that feels true to you. If you’re unsure, reach out! I’m always happy to help guide you toward what’s best for your hair and your goals.
Q: What makes a curly cut different from a traditional haircut? Curly cuts are designed for curls not just hair that happens to be curly. Traditional cuts often rely on straightening the hair before shaping, which can disguise your true texture. In contrast, I cut curls in their dry, natural state to better understand how they live and move. This allows me to shape your hair in a way that honors your texture, enhances definition, and fits your lifestyle. Dry cutting means your curls are cut in their natural, lived-in state, dry, defined, and detangled. This gives me a more accurate view of how your hair truly behaves and helps ensure a shape that works with your curl pattern, not against it. It’s especially helpful for textured and layered shapes where symmetry and balance are key.
Q: Why do curly cuts cost more than regular salon cuts? Curly cuts are highly specialized and tailored to each client’s unique curl pattern, density, and goals. Unlike traditional wet cuts, they involve an in-depth dry cutting technique, a personalized consultation, a complete cleansing and styling session, and plenty of education along the way. You’re not just getting a haircut , you’re receiving a service designed to help you understand, care for, and maintain your curls long-term. The time, training, and attention to detail required is greater and that’s reflected in the pricing.
Q: How long will my first visit take? First visits typically take between 2–2.5 hours, depending on your hair length, density, and what service you're booked for. This time includes an in-depth consultation, dry cut, cleansing, styling, and education. I never rush first visits — this is your time to feel seen, heard, and cared for.
Q: Do you offer styling-only services or trims between full cuts? Yes! For established clients, I offer maintenance cuts within 4 months of your last visit. These are great for touching up shape or keeping your length in check. I also offer styling sessions for those times you want a reset, refresh, or education without committing to a cut.
Q: What if I’m transitioning from heat or chemical damage? You’re in the right place. Transitioning can be a vulnerable but empowering process, and it often requires patience and support. In many cases, the first cut is what I call a “transitional cut” as it’s the beginning of shifting your shape and health, but it may take a few visits to fully resolve damage or achieve the results you’re after. I’ll guide you every step of the way, with realistic goals and care strategies tailored to your hair.
Q: Can I contact you with questions before booking? Of course! I always encourage open communication. If you have questions about services, what to book, or whether we’re a good fit, don’t hesitate to reach out. I want you to feel confident before securing your appointment. Please allow 2–3 business days for a response.
Q: Do you do both textured and straight styles for weddings? Yes, I do! I specialize in working with all textures, including curls, coils, and waves. I also offer sleek or smoothed styles for those wanting a more polished, straight look. Whether you're embracing your natural texture or going for something different on your big day, we’ll create a look that feels like you.
Q: Do you travel for bridal styling? Yes! I offer on-location bridal styling for curly brides and their bridal parties. I’m always happy to travel throughout West Michigan and beyond! If you’d like to work together, just complete my bridal intake form and share all your dreamy details!
Q: How far in advance should I book for bridal services? In short, ASAP! I recommend reserving your bridal date at least 6–12 months in advance to make sure your spot is secured, especially during peak wedding season. If you’re planning closer to your date, please reach out anyway! I’ll always do my best to accommodate you if I have availability.
